By the 1960s, the strip had become the undisputed home of Melbourne's Italian community, lined with espresso bars, family kitchens and trattorias carrying recipes straight from Calabria, Sicily and Emilia-Romagna.

Fernando and Elena Donnini started with a simple belief — great Italian food starts with the right ingredients, the right technique, and absolutely no shortcuts. Four generations later, nothing has changed.
The credentials back it up. In 1982, the Italian President awarded Donnini's the Ciao Italia Award — best Italian restaurant in all of Australasia. In 2025, The Age Good Food Guide awarded them a Hat. On Google and OpenTable, thousands of verified diners have given Donnini's consistently outstanding ratings across hundreds of reviews.
